ITEM RECURRENCE

you can get to know the item’s frequency using one of three measures:

  • the n° of months of expense
  •  the n° of purchases
  • the n° of days of purchase

you can easily go to any subset of items by:

  • by n° of months of expense
  • n° of purchases
  • n° of day of purchase
  • name
  • year of expense

and list the items in:

  • ascending or
  • descending order

the app finds:

  • rare but recurrent items
  • very frequent items

they’re identified by a special icon in the top left-hand corner of the item’s card

in this example, it’s rare but recurrent sub categories

you can tap on that icon, to get info about the conditions that have to be met, for an item to be regarded as rare but recurrent

you can tap on the red button, to show only items that are:

  • rare but recurrent items
  • and those that are very frequent

the app also tells you:

  • whether most of the items are very frequent or rare from month to month

here, for example 73.85% of sub categories with expense in 2017, have expense in one month only: most of your sub categories with expense in 2017, are rare from month to month;

only 4.62% of sub categories have expense in 8 months (only 3.08% of sub categories have expense in 11 months: that can’t be seen in this image because that card is at the bottom of the list)

a spike in the price of an essential sub category that has expense in 11 months, can have an impact on your overall expense

  • whether most of the items are very frequent or rare throughout the year, in the most recent year of expense

here only 5% of categories have expense in 20 days, and another 5% on 50 days. N° of days of purchase are the n° of days on which you spent money so far in 2016, so only 10% of your categories have been frequent, so far,  in your expense

  • whether most of the items are bought in small or large amounts

here, for the vast majority of items, you bought small amounts in 2017: for example only 1 purchase for 42.86% of categories, and for 69.23% of sub categories

REMOVING SUB CATEGORIES FROM CONSIDERATION

removing sub categories from consideration, means not considering them in the calculations, it doesn’t mean deleting them from the database

removing sub categories from consideration allows you to:

1)  to focus on ordinary expense:

  • by removing sub categories that represent exceptional expense, like the purchase of a motor vehicle, new pieces of furniture, a big fine, big medical expenses
  • to get to know how much each category weighs on your total ordinary expense
  • or how much the exceptional expenses impact your expense variability

2) to focus on the more frequent expense:

  • by removing rare but recurrent sub categories (like electric power bills, natural gas bills, taxes)

3) to focus on the more stable expense:

  • by removing very variable sub categories

4) to focus on a specific group of expenses:

  • for example, you want to know how much taxes weigh on your expense:
you can remove tax sub categories like, vehicle taxes (motor vehicle category), house taxes (house category), garbage collection taxes (food category),
income taxes and then you can see the share of total expense, taken by taxes across all the sub categories of expense
